Ok Ok Me Too Already.

I'd only read the first Harry Potter book before. But today I went to return a book to the local library at about 1pm. As I was about to leave, it started to rain, so I sat down to do a little work in my notebook. After a few minutes, I looked up to see that I had chosen a place next to the promotional rack with the new Harry Potter books in it, so I picked up a copy and read the first chapter. I decided to take it with me, and returned to my work.

A half hour later the library was closing, and as I was checking out, someone happened to return The Half-Blood Prince right next to me, so I took it too so I could read it first. The rain still hadn't let up, so I read a couple chapters of it in a coffee house across the street. I managed to drag myself away when the rain stopped and programmed some at school, reading when I went to the washroom, and perhaps going to the washroom more than I really needed to.

At 8pm I returned home. Now, at 2:45am, I have finished The Half-Blood Prince, and am straining to hold myself back from starting the last one because I know if I do, I won't get anything done at all tomorrow.

I love it, it's a great story and a pleasure to read, but a physical addiction couldn't be more debilitating. With books like these, I just can't make myself want to do anything but read it. It was even a struggle to make myself heat up soup in the microwave by 11:30, and when I did so, it was not because I was hungry but because I knew I would feel bad later if I didn't eat. Wonderful stories can be hazardous to your health.

I always end up with these problems too. It's rough to explain to others that you're having a tough time getting through the day because you didn't put down a book until you finished it between 4-5 a.m. even though you're working the next day. I always have a problem with Terry Prachett books - they're fun and light enough reads I know I can finish them in a few hours, but if I start them too late at night I also know I'm not going to stop until I finish those few hours later.

On a separate note: I can't believe there were actually copies of the new book available for you to just waltz in and pick up. I imagined there would be waiting lists everywhere for such a highly coveted item. Or did everyone who wanted to read it go ahead and buy it at midnight Saturday?

It is strange -- casual observation says that many stores seem to be sold out of them, but the library had six or seven sitting unclaimed. My bitter angry side would like to think that London libraries are under- or inefficiently utilized because of their lousy card catalog and membership policies.

Yeah, I was up until 6am last night finishing the last one. The book ends at dawn, and I finished reading it at dawn, which was pretty nice. I almost wonder if Rowling did that on purpose as a favor to fans who would be up all night reading it.
